START BY BELIEVING DAY
START BY BELIEVING DAY IS THE FIRST WEDNESDAY OF EVERY APRIL
Start by Believing Day provides an opportunity for communities across the country, and around the world, to unify with a single voice for those who have been the victims of sexual violence:
We hear you, and we are here to help.
What is it?
On this day, we gather to end the silence and change the way we respond to sexual assault. We Start by Believing.
Please join us in this global message of support for survivors.
We chose this day to build on the momentum that began in April 2015, when State Representative Angela Romero sponsored a resolution to declare the first annual Start by Believing Day in Utah.
While many other communities and states have made similar proclamations, Utah’s resolution took the innovative step of establishing it as an annual event.
We can all help to create this international event, each and every year. We can all Start by Believing.
WHERE TO BEGIN?
We have all the tools you need to get started, but the first step is to make a personal pledge. It all starts with you.

In April 2021, we celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Start by Believing, and the 6th annual Start by Believing Day. Despite restrictions on in-person gatherings, thousands of people still found creative ways to reach survivors with this message of support. Here are just a few highlights:
A few other notable accomplishments include:
- 81 new communities participated in Start by Believing (check out our campaign map!)
- Nearly 1,000 people made a personal pledge
- Millions were reached via social and traditional media
Chicago – Largest Start by Believing City
In Chicago, both Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Police Department Superintendent David O. Brown made the pledge to Start by Believing, cementing Chicago’s status as the largest Start by Believing city in the US!
Start by Believing Day – It All Began in Utah
Utah continues to lead the way on Start by Believing Day! In 2021, Utah Governor Spencer J. Cox, and Lieutenant Governor Deidre M. Henderson both pledged to Start by Believing, as did Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson and Sheriff Rosie Rivera! Check out their pledge videos, and a live TV interview on ABC4 Utah with EVAWI’s own Alison Jones-Lockwood offering a national perspective on the campaign and showcasing Utah’s role as a global leader.
Pledge Challenge Results Are In!
This year’s pledge challenge was also a terrific success. We received a total of 1,050 pledges between April 5-12, and even more before and after the challenge period. Congratulations to Ohio, Utah State University, and Denver, Colorado!
Even more pledges were made on social media, by people not participating in the 2021 challenge. Together, we are helping to spread the message of Start by Believing far and wide!
